Rooftop Apartment Stationsweg
the Netherlands, The Hague
In assignment of Teun Blijenberg we provided the design and technical drawings for a rooftop apartement and extension of the second floor of an apartment in the centre of The Hague.
The shape of the extension on the roof of a three-storey building is partly determined by the regulations. From the gutter, the roof slopes back, creating a modest volume. On the roof of the extension on the second floor is a large roof terrace.
The extension consists of a light timber-frame construction clad in zinc, a material that contrasts with the existing building to create a distinction between the old and the new. The new window frames are bronze anodised to show the natural shine of aluminium to match the natural look of zinc.

Interior
To provide the middle part of the appartment with enough daylight we designed two big skylights. One above the stairs and one in the large bedroom at the backside of the apartment. The bedroom in the back has a new balcony on the south side of the building. The bedroom on the front side has a dormer with a peek through over the lower part of the original facade.
Adding the bedrooms on the new third floor makes it possible leave the second floor as one open space with kitche, sitting area and dining room. In the extra extension on the former balcony of the second floor we added the study.
