Marienhoeve

Wijk bij Duurstede, The Netherlands,
There is a large sports complex on the Lekdijk in Wijk bij Duurstede. The multifunctional sports halls on the site were designed by Niels Olivier Architect in collaboration with Bo.2 Rotterdam, after winning the tender for this in 2013.

The sports halls accommodate four areas; 2 large multifunctional halls, a gymnastics hall (Olympic training status) and a gymnasium. The various areas are recognizable as separate buildings, comparable in size to the barns and stables of the farms in the surroundings of the complex. In addition, the facade cladding changes color with the weather conditions, making the building blend even more into its surroundings.

Building for sports always means a tense relationship between investment and exploitation. That is no different in this situation. As indicated in the request, the budget is leading. The most favorable possible operation must be achieved within the budget, all functionality with the lowest possible costs in investment, maintenance and consumption costs. In the end, the interior derives its quality from the sports experience. The three larger sports halls are immediately visible from the central canteen, and we have chosen honest, robust materials for the interior walls that do not require additional finishing or protection.
