Stadskade Tilburg

the Netherlands, Tilburg
In the city centre of Tilburg a new district emerges on the edge of the Piushaven, a local canal. Stadskade Tilburg is one of the blocks of a former industrial area that is being transformed to a  lively inner-city neighborhood. Paul Goltstein of Bo.2 architectuur en stedenbouw asked us to join the designteam for a great part this block; 9 terraced houses, 2 semidetached house and a block with 11 apartments. The urban plan is also made by Bo.2 architectuur en stedenbouw.

Situation
The apartment block consists of 9 apartments and 2 penthouses, on top of a half-sunken parking garage. Also this block is characterized by brickwork and steel frames. Two kinds of brickwork, used in different directions and planes, define a subtle grid. The vertical lines are just a bit more articulated to make the building look more slim.

All the apartments have a big balcony that overlooks the canal. The floorplan is designed foremost around them. The balconies are supported by steel profiles that make a visual connection to the terraced housing. The penthouses are set back from the façade on two sides. On one side this is done to keep more space in between  the block and an apartment tower on the next plot. On the side of the canal the setback makes it possible to have a big roof garden or balcony with an excellent view. All the windows stretch from ceiling to floor, so that also from the inside the view on the canal is guaranteed.

Terraced housing
The terraced housing is located around a central square. The main idea of these houses is to design the kitchen next to the front door facing this central car free area. Most of the kitchens have French doors to create a yard-like atmosphere and to increase the sense of a community. The facades, brickwork and characteristic aluminum window framing, refer to the industrial past of the area. The steel profiles, that are used as a lintel but also to support the canopy above the entrance contribute to the industrial atmosphere.
