De Caai Milk Reception

The Netherlands, Eindhoven
Bottle Distillery has been a user of the Milk Reception since 2019. The overlap between the former craft function of the Milk Reception and its function as a distillery is significant. Because of this overlap, there has been no reason to make major interventions to the property. Therefore, from a functional perspective, the exterior and interior of the building can largely remain in its original state. Monumental and non-monumental features are thus visibly preserved and remain functional.

Existing tiled walls, tiled floors, landings, the characteristic gathering space for the drivers who came to deliver the milk have been preserved. Even the contours of the old Campina milk tanks are still visible. For instance, one of the footprints of the milk tanks now features the distillation boiler. Nevertheless, a number of adjustments have been necessary to bring the use of the Bottle Distillery Milk Reception Unit up to current requirements in terms of its new function and (fire) safety: doors have been (re)installed on the east façade, for instance, and terrace doors have been installed on the west façade. The adjustments were worked out at the time by Wenink Holtkamp Architects. Coordination took place with the Spatial Quality Committee. The Municipality of Eindhoven granted the permit on 28 August 2019.

The Milk Reception now requires maintenance and restoration to maintain the monument values, as described in the Heritage Vision for Dairy Factory Campina Eindhoven, in the long term. In addition, sustainability options are being considered. This always involves weighing functionality and feasibility against cultural-historical values. The most important interventions are the replacement of the single glass with hr++ glass and the embellishment/reconstruction of a number of façade sections. The regular design of the infills of the concrete frames is partly restored in this way. The Melkontvangst is part of Zuivelfabriek Campina and is closely linked to the Melkfabriek. This is particularly true of the exterior. Intended adjustments to the Milk Reception Centre take account, where applicable, of the adjustments as realised for the Milk Factory. Detailing and colouring will therefore be closely aligned with the Milk Factory. The Milk Factory and the Milk Reception will also preferably go through the licensing process together.

The renovated facade will be constructed in three partitions: the plinth finished with the white tiles, shadowboxes and glass partitions.
Shadowbox is part of transparent façade section and contrasts with tiles and tile motif. Thus, we create a dense façade without adding a new material,

At the rear of the Milk Receiving Station, a facade has been in the past, a façade section was opened up and replaced by a closed steel facade with door that has now been painted over. Instead of reconstrutuating this facade part, we see an opportunity here to show something of the past. Proposal is to put a photo with an explanation of the original dairy with a "wallprint" on the facade.
The intervention is to print / enamelise a photo with an explanation of the original milk factory in glass to be printed / enamelled and on the facade to replace the Trespa panels (as shown in the 'special' above).
